I'm Jane Gale, a dyslexia assessor and qualified specialist teacher with 20 years of experience in mainstream primary schools.
During these 20 years I have had the roles of Key Stage Leader, member of the Senior Leadership Team, Head of RE, Head of English, Head of Computing and also worked as an English Leading Teacher for Hertfordshire County Council, supporting many local schools with the teaching of English. At university, I achieved my Bachelor of Education (QTS), as well as a Master of Education degree.
Throughout my teaching career, I have had the privilege of supporting children with a variety of additional needs in the classroom. I am deeply passionate about ensuring that all learners receive the support they need, and I firmly believe that no child should ever be left behind.
After many years of teaching, I completed my Certificate of Competence in Educational Testing (CCET) set by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and am now listed as a registered test user for Dyslexia Assessment Testing. I have also been awarded my British Dyslexia Association Level 5 Certificate in Dyslexia; Literacy, Support and Intervention, which qualifies me as a Specialist Teacher. Finally, I achieved my Level 7 qualifications and have been awarded a postgraduate certificate in Special Educational Needs and Disability, as well as the postgraduate qualification of Dyslexia - Professional Report Writing from Middlesex University.
My desire and passion for study is evident through the number of additional courses that I have embarked on in recent years. This drive comes from my desire to better support the diverse range of learners in my classroom and to acquire the skills necessary to teach them in the most effective way that meets their individual needs.
My training as a specialist dyslexia teacher provided me with valuable experience of the practical aspects of teaching learners who exhibit a variety of learning difficulties. During my placements I planned one-to-one, highly structured, multi-sensory lessons that were tailored to the individual needs of the learner. The placements were varied and involved working with vulnerable children, as well as reluctant learners, which I found incredibly rewarding. Although I have loved being a classroom teacher during the last twenty years, I really found a sense of enjoyment and reward in the one-to-one teaching sessions. I realised this is something I wanted to develop further.
As well as my passion for supporting learners in one-to-one settings, I found that I wanted to gain a better understanding of what was causing their barriers to learning and found myself taking a real interest in identification of special education needs. It was then that I decided to embark on my postgraduate qualification to become a dyslexia assessor.
Throughout my training as a dyslexia assessor, I learnt that dyslexia assessment, where no two cases are alike, is demanding, intriguing and rewarding. I found that it brought me substantial professional responsibility, as decisions are not always easy.
But I also found it an absolute privilege to work with children, empowering them to change their lives for the better. My aim is to carry out positive and professional assessments, which will seek to identify strengths, as well as weaknesses, conducted thoroughly and carefully with clear practical outcomes.
My dyslexia assessments and recommendations help to provide an entirely new way forward for an individual and this is what makes it all so worthwhile to me.
When I am not assessing, I am often found playing taxi service to my two children or walking my beloved cockapoo, Rocco!
